BrandSKU uses three printing methods to produce print-on-demand orders: sublimation, UV printing, and digital direct printing. Each method works differently and suits different types of products. This article explains how each method works, when it's used, and what to expect from the final print.
Sublimation
Sublimation (also known as dye sublimation) transfers an image onto a product using heat rather than printing directly on top of the surface. The design is first printed onto a special transfer paper, then heat-pressed onto the product so the ink bonds into the material itself.
Because the ink becomes part of the material, sublimation prints won't crack, peel, or fade over time. The entire product surface can typically be printed, making sublimation a great choice for full-coverage designs.
Best for: Polyester apparel, mugs, drinkware, phone cases, mouse pads, and other products with a polymer-coated surface.
Note: Sublimation only works on light-colored, polyester-based, or polymer-coated surfaces. Colors on darker materials may appear muted or shifted.
UV Printing
UV printing is a form of digital printing that uses ultraviolet light to cure ink the moment it's applied to the product. The design is printed directly onto the product surface — it's not a decal or sticker.
Because the ink hardens instantly under UV light, prints are highly resistant to fading, scratching, and moisture. UV printing is also environmentally friendly, as the process releases no harmful fumes.
Best for: Hard surface products like drinkware, phone cases, wooden signs, acrylic panels, metal items, and other rigid materials.
Note: Due to the way UV printing lays down ink, faint horizontal lines or a light grain texture may be visible up close. This is normal and part of the printing process, not a defect.
Digital Direct Printing
Digital direct printing applies ink directly onto the product surface using a specialized inkjet printer. It's a versatile method that handles a wide range of materials and produces detailed, full-color prints.
Direct printing works well for designs with fine detail, gradients, or photographic content. The final result feels smooth to the touch and holds up well to regular use.
Best for: Canvas prints, wall art, home décor items, and other flat or curved surfaces where fine detail matters.
Choosing the Right Method
You don't need to choose the printing method yourself — BrandSKU automatically assigns the best method based on the product you're customizing. When you upload a design in the product designer, you'll see a preview showing how the final print will look.
If you're unsure whether a specific effect (like metallic ink, glow-in-the-dark, or embroidered detail) can be achieved with BrandSKU's available methods, note that we currently do not offer DTG, DTF, or all-over printing.
