How to Customize Your Product Branding

Sofia Ramirez Written by Sofia Ramirez

Once your brand kit is set up on BrandSKU, applying custom branding to your orders takes just a few clicks. This article walks through how to add custom packaging, hang tags, inserts, tissue paper, and private labels to a specific product — from selection to preview to placing the order.

Note: Before you can customize product branding, you'll need to have your brand assets already uploaded to BrandSKU. If you haven't done this yet, see How to Set Up Your Design on BrandSKU first.

Step 1: Check Branding Availability for Your Product

Not every product supports every branding service. Before customizing, confirm which options are available for the product you want to order.

  1. Browse the catalog and open the product's detail page.
  2. Look for the Branding Options section on the product page.
  3. Available services will be listed (custom packaging, hang tags, private labels, inserts, tissue paper). Services not listed are not supported for that product.

Step 2: Add Branding to Your Product

Once you've confirmed which services are available:

  1. Click Start Designing to open the product designer.
  2. In the sidebar, click Branding Services.
  3. Select the branding options you want to add. Each service will show:
    • The estimated cost
    • The estimated production time impact
    • A preview of how it will look on the product

Step 3: Configure Each Branding Element

Every branding service has its own setup. Here's what to configure for each.

Custom Packaging

Custom packaging replaces the standard shipping box with your branded version.

  • Select your brand folder to pull the packaging artwork from
  • Choose a packaging style (box size, material, opening type)
  • Preview the final box design before saving

Hang Tags

Hang tags are small tags attached to the product via string or plastic loop, visible when the customer first opens the package.

  • Select the hang tag artwork from your brand folder
  • Choose the size and material (paper, cardstock, fabric)
  • Confirm attachment point on the product

Inserts

Inserts are cards placed inside the package — often used for thank-you notes, discount codes, or QR codes linking to reviews or social media.

  • Upload or select the insert artwork from your brand folder
  • Choose the card size
  • Add any personalized text if the insert template supports it

Tissue Paper

Tissue paper wraps the product inside the package, adding a premium unboxing feel.

  • Select a repeating pattern from your brand folder
  • Choose the tissue paper color (which affects how your pattern prints)
  • Preview how the pattern tiles across the paper

Private Labels

Private labels are printed or sewn onto the product itself — most commonly interior neck labels on apparel, side seam labels, or care instruction tags.

  • Select the label design from your brand folder
  • Choose the application method (printed, heat-transferred, sewn)
  • Confirm placement on the product

Step 4: Preview the Full Branded Order

Before submitting the order, review the full preview showing how everything will appear together.

  • The product with any designs and private labels applied
  • The custom packaging box
  • Tissue paper and inserts inside the package
  • Hang tags attached to the product

Tip: Order a sample first. Even with a good preview, the physical unboxing experience is worth confirming in person before committing to a large production run.

Step 5: Place Your Order

Once you're happy with the setup:

  1. Add the branded product to your cart.
  2. Enter the shipping address and choose a shipping method.
  3. Review the final order total — the base product price plus each branding service you selected.
  4. Complete payment to send the order into production.

Branded orders take longer to produce than standard POD orders — see How Long Does Private Label Production Take for timeline details.

Managing Branding Costs and Coupons

Note: Coupons and promotional discounts cannot be applied to branding products. This policy preserves the premium quality and exclusivity of custom-branded items. If you have a promotional code, it will apply only to the base product cost, not to any branding services added to the order.

Applying Branding to Recurring Orders

If you want the same branding setup to apply to every future order of a specific product, save the configured product as a brand template. From then on, any order for that product will automatically include the same branding services and artwork.

To save a template:

  1. In the product designer, click Save as Template at the top right.
  2. Name the template (for example, "Summer 2026 Tee — Full Branding").
  3. Apply the template to new orders directly from your brand folder.
