What to Check Before Adding a Product to Your Store

Adding a product takes a few clicks, but choosing the right product decides whether your store grows or stalls. Beyond the usual checks (shipping time, cost, margin—things any dropshipping guide covers), there are a few questions that matter more if you're building a brand.

Can This Product Carry Your Brand?

If a product only ships in plain supplier packaging with no room for a logo, hang tag, or custom insert, it's much harder to build a memorable brand around it. Products that support custom packaging, private label, or POD give you the space to make each order feel like it came from your store—not from a warehouse.

For BrandSKU users, this is usually the first question worth asking: does this product have any surface, tag, or packaging where your brand can show up?

Is This a Category Worth Committing To?

Small, lightweight products are cheap to test but crowded—everyone else is testing them too. Larger and non-standard items (furniture, lighting, home decor, car accessories) have higher margins, less competition, and customers who care more about brand and quality than saving a dollar.

The tradeoff is longer shipping and higher return costs. But if you're building a brand rather than chasing quick wins, these categories usually pay off better over time.

Does It Give You Room to Stand Out?

If the exact same product is being sold by 200 other stores at nearly the same price, your only way to win is a lower price—and that's a race to the bottom. Products worth adding are the ones where your branding, your listing, or your positioning can make a real difference.

BrandSKU's catalog includes both standard items (where branding is your main lever) and category-exclusive items other platforms don't carry (where the product itself is your differentiator). Either can work—but pick with intent.
