Color mode is one of the most overlooked technical details in POD design — and one of the most common causes of "the print doesn't match my file" complaints. This guide explains which color mode BrandSKU recommends, why it matters, and how to set it up correctly in your design software.
Why RGB Instead of CMYK
RGB (Red, Green, Blue)
The color model used by screens, cameras, and digital devices. It uses light to create color, which produces a wider range — including bright, saturated blues, greens, and reds that CMYK simply cannot reproduce.
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black)
The color model traditionally used in offset and commercial printing. It uses ink pigments and has a narrower color range, particularly noticeable in vibrant blues, greens, and neon shades.
Modern POD print methods — especially DTG, sublimation, and UV — operate on printer-specific ICC color profiles that draw from a wider gamut than standard CMYK. Uploading in RGB gives our production system the maximum color information to work with, and the file is converted at print time to match each printer's actual capabilities.
If you upload a CMYK file, the system still processes it, but you may lose access to some of the brighter color range your design originally intended.
How to Set the Right Color Mode
In Adobe Photoshop
Go to Image → Mode → RGB Color, then Edit → Convert to Profile → sRGB IEC61966-2.1.
In Adobe Illustrator
Go to File → Document Color Mode → RGB Color, then Edit → Assign Profile → sRGB IEC61966-2.1.
In Procreate or iPad Apps
Set the canvas color profile to sRGB when creating a new canvas. Existing canvases can be exported with the sRGB profile embedded.
In Canva, Figma, or Web-based Tools
These tools default to sRGB, so no adjustment is usually needed. Export as PNG or JPG for POD upload.
What Happens When You Upload
Step 1: The file is scanned for resolution, dimensions, and color profile.
Step 2: If the file is in RGB with an embedded sRGB profile, no conversion is needed at this stage.
Step 3: If the file is in CMYK, a wide-gamut RGB, or has no embedded profile, our system attempts an automatic conversion to sRGB and flags any color shifts.
Step 4: At print time, the file is converted from sRGB to the printer's specific ICC profile, matched to the material and print method being used.
Tips for Best Color Results
- Design in RGB from the start — converting from CMYK to RGB later loses information rather than adding it
- Embed the sRGB profile when exporting so BrandSKU reads the exact intended values
- Preview mockups on multiple screens before publishing — your monitor calibration affects perceived color
- Order samples for color-critical designs — brand identity products, gradient-heavy artwork, and pastel palettes benefit most from physical verification
- Add a color disclaimer to your product listings so customers understand small variation is normal in POD
